Rio Frio Cave and Rio On Pools: Belize's Natural Retreat in the Mountain Pine Ridge
After a full day of climbing ancient pyramids and trekking through the jungle to visit sites like Caracol, there is no better way to find relief than plunging into the cool waters of the Mountain Pine Ridge. Our adventure crew—Eamon, Athena, and myself—needed a break after tackling the heights of Caracol. Luckily, the tour itinerary included two of Belize's most beautiful natural wonders: the immense Rio Frio Cave and the cascading Rio On Pools.
This part of the trip felt like stepping into a natural paradise, offering a refreshing and unforgettable contrast to the ancient stone cities. If you are looking for the perfect natural stop to balance your jungle adventures, this guide is for you.
The Cave of the Great Mouth: Rio Frio Cave
Our first stop was Rio Frio Cave, known for having the largest cave entrance in all of Belize. The sight of it alone is breathtaking.
An Entrance of Massive Scale
As we approached the cave, the opening was indeed massive, shaded beautifully by the surrounding jungle canopy. The scale is so grand that you can see far into the cavern without needing a light—a true rarity in the caving world. Even before stepping inside, we could already hear the unique acoustic signature of the cave: the faint sound of a waterfall. As we walked along the riverbank and got closer to the mouth, the sound intensified, creating an immediate sense of mystery.
Stepping Into the Cool Darkness
Stepping inside felt like crossing a natural threshold. The air immediately changed; the temperature cooled slightly (thanks to a slight breeze), and the air filled with the scent of damp earth and wet dirt. The most impressive part inside was the way the river rushed over the stone, with the echoing sound of the waterfall amplified by the cathedral-like ceiling. We explored the cavern, noting the natural rock formations, before continuing to our next destination.
For those interested in more serious subterranean exploration, our journey into Crystal Cave offers a completely different, darker caving experience.
Rio On Pools: The Perfect Place to Cool Off
Next up were the Rio On Pools, a destination that promised the perfect antidote to the Belize heat. The pools are a series of natural swimming holes carved into a huge expanse of solid granite, with small waterfalls cascading from one basin to the next.
Diving into the Chilly Water
All four of us, including Linda, who rejoined us, headed down to the pools. The sun was bright and hot, so the moment we stepped into the water, it was a pleasant shock. It was genuinely chilly but felt incredibly refreshing after a long day of touring ancient sites like Caracol.
We found a comfortable little basin, settled in, and just watched the tiny waterfalls cascade down the reddish-brown rocks. This was pure relaxation. Getting around between the pools was easy; while the rock was a little slick in spots, it was mostly flat, making the footing manageable for everyone.
A Sudden Change in Ambience
As often happens in the rainforest, the ambiance changed quickly. It started to sprinkle, and the light rain actually added a soothing, atmospheric quality to the experience. Unfortunately, the light drizzle quickly turned into a hard rain, forcing us to cut our swim short. The downpour was intense, and it served as a powerful reminder of how quickly conditions can change—especially when driving out on the forest roads, which quickly became muddy.

Planning Your Mountain Pine Ridge Visit
Rio Frio Cave and Rio On Pools are often packaged with the Caracol tour, making them a fantastic and efficient pairing.
Location: Both sites are located within the scenic Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve.
Logistics: While the road can be rough (especially after heavy rain), the sites are generally easy to access once you are there.
Must-Pack: Bring water shoes or sandals with a good grip, as the rocks around the pools can be slick.
Whether you're cooling off after a big climb or just seeking a beautiful natural escape, Rio Frio Cave and Rio On Pools should be at the top of your Belize itinerary. For more tips on jungle travel and preparation, see Belize Jungle Packing List.
